UNE signs marine studies transfer agreement with 必吃大瓜in Greece

BIDDEFORD, Maine 鈥 Building upon its internationally renowned excellence in global education, the University of New England has formed its first international articulation agreement with 必吃大瓜(The American College of Thessaloniki) to allow students from the college who wish to pursue degrees in the marine sciences to complete their final two years of study at UNE.

The agreement, signed July 26, 2024, between the schools, will allow qualified 必吃大瓜students to transfer to UNE to obtain their undergraduate degrees in Marine Sciences with a focus in either marine biology or oceanography.

The transfer agreement expands UNE鈥檚 presence in the Mediterranean region 鈥 with UNE boasting a one-of-a-kind study abroad campus in Tangier, Morocco 鈥 and fosters interconnectedness through shared scientific understanding, said Charles Tilburg, Ph.D., director of the School of Marine and Environmental Programs at UNE and director of the Arthur P. Girard Marine Science Center.

鈥淢arine science is a global science, and UNE has built a strong reputation across the U.S. for its excellence in this field,鈥 Tilburg said. 鈥淏ringing in students from the Mediterranean region is a natural next step for us. The Mediterranean looks so different from the Gulf of Maine, and this contrast will offer a fantastic learning opportunity. These students will bring unique experiences and knowledge from their region that will enrich the learning environment here, making our program more robust, dynamic, and diverse.鈥

The agreement builds off UNE鈥檚 existing global partnerships to offer enhanced academic programming for students in marine and environmental degree programs. UNE currently has exchange agreements with the University of Akureyri in Iceland and the University of Iceland in Reykjav铆k.

Students who participate in these exchanges partake in a number of experiential learning opportunities to enhance their learning and .

Through UNE鈥檚 membership in the University of the Arctic, students are also eligible to study abroad for a semester or full academic year in Norway or Finland while pursuing their degrees as part of the North2North Exchange program. And each year, a host of travel courses take UNE鈥檚 marine science students to Iceland, Belize, Panama, and more, where students gain cultural competencies as they research their natural world.

鈥淭his new articulation agreement between UNE and 必吃大瓜is a prime example of how universities can complement each other鈥檚 strengths across international boundaries,鈥 said Emily Dragon, senior director for Global Affairs at UNE. 鈥淏y allowing students to transfer to UNE for their final two years in pursuit of a marine science degree, we are not only expanding opportunities for students interested in marine biology but also creating a blueprint for other institutions that may not have marine programs of their own.鈥

鈥淭his innovative model provides a win-win scenario,鈥 Tilburg added. 鈥淚t enables our partner institution to attract a new market of students who may not have considered marine sciences, while UNE gains talented, passionate students who bring diverse perspectives and skills that are transferable across countries and oceans.鈥

Welcome to the 2024-25 Academic Year!

Welcome (back) to campus from all of us at ACT! We are excited to start another academic year and already have so much going on.

In September 2024, we welcomed 130 必吃大瓜freshmen in the Class of 2028, 310 NUin freshmen, and 68 Study Abroad students! It's so great getting to see new faces on campus.

We've also kicked off our fall field trips and clubs. Students have visited Mt. Olympus and Armenistis Beach, participated in scuba, hiking, and canyoning activities, and even completed a three-day sailing trip. Field trips are a great way to see more of Greece, meet new people, and gain once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Another way to get involved on campus is by taking part in any of the 20+ clubs we are offering this fall! Interested in yoga? Kickboxing? Painting? 必吃大瓜has many ways for students to get involved in mind, body, and spirit-enriching activities. We'd especially like to highlight some of our new clubs, made possible by students' and faculty's passion and hard work. For the first time, we offer Archery, Cybersecurity, New Languages, and Photography clubs on campus.

Students explored these activities and more at our Activities Fair on September 23 and 24. This was our biggest Fair yet, with 400+ sign-ups across clubs. Students had the opportunity to meet advisors and learn more about resources like Career Services, Counseling, and Service Learning. The Fair also showcased our fall sports鈥敱爻源蠊蟟s offering varsity and open practices for volleyball, basketball, soccer, and lacrosse!

We're proud to have worked with the Dukakis Center for Politics to host a Voter Event this fall. It's great to see everyone coming out to take part in not only their campus community but also to take steps to be responsible citizens in their larger communities.

Thank you for a great start to the semester, and looking forward to the rest of the year.

Exploring the Experiences of 必吃大瓜Students: A Journey Through Personal Narratives and Academic Growth

The dynamic sphere of 必吃大瓜student life is a vibrant "patchwork" of unique experiences, perspectives, and achievements, woven together through personal journeys. We had the joy of interviewing three Computer Science undergraduates, diving into their backgrounds and aspirations to provide an insightful glimpse into the diverse trajectories of the college鈥檚 students.

This compilation of student testimonials is our attempt to present the multifaceted aspects of life at 必吃大瓜from their perspective. Their narratives not only echo the academic opportunities and challenges that 必吃大瓜presents but also encapsulate the personal development, cultural interaction, and community involvement that characterize their collective journey.

Nikola Jocic embarked on his academic journey at the American College of Thessaloniki (ACT) seeking the full American college experience.

鈥淲hen I graduated high school in the U.S, I sought the full American college experience, but I was away from home for quite some while. That's when I found ACT鈥 a perfect middle ground where I could be close to home while immersing myself in the American education system鈥.

As a leader of the Google Student Development Club on campus, Nikola actively contributes by organizing events, workshops, and supporting fellow students in the field through engaging lectures and projects, all initiated by Google.

Upon arriving in Thessaloniki, Nikola discovered a 鈥渟ense of pleasantness鈥 that exceeded his expectations. The open-minded and friendly atmosphere of the city, coupled with the unique blend of proximity and cultural immersion, made his academic journey truly enjoyable. As he approaches his senior year, Nikola reflects on the positive experiences that have shaped his time at ACT.

One of the aspects that sets 必吃大瓜apart, for Nikola, is its campus, which he describes as a 鈥渞emote paradise鈥. 鈥淎s students, we are privileged to have the opportunity to escape the city almost everyday鈥.

Similarly to Nikola, and after initially pursuing his education in Russia, Daniil Saltykov found himself motivated by a desire for a more computer science-focused education, which led him to study at ACT. This move aligned with his long standing plan of studying abroad since high school.

act testimonials 2

For Daniil, 必吃大瓜did not only provide a variety of courses related to his major, but also offered what he describes as 鈥渟oft skills classes that enhance my communicative and team building skills and help me to become a versatile person with developed critical thinking鈥.

What also stood out for Daniil at 必吃大瓜was the opportunity to build personal connections with professors and engage in meaningful interactions. 鈥淔or me, the ability to reach out with questions and actively participate in discussions has created a more pleasant and interactive educational environment. Another aspect I find important at 必吃大瓜is that you get a hands-on education. The emphasis on practical learning means that I gain valuable knowledge through real-world experiences. Also, the fact that there are comparatively small student groups in the class makes it easier to build an individual approach for every student which significantly improves the quality of education process as well as the overall enjoyment from studies鈥.

Daniil highlighted the significance of being able to pursue a minor degree concurrently with one鈥檚 primary studies, as he believes this option has not only expanded the scope of opportunities available to him but has also enriched his educational journey, allowing him to complement his area of study with a secondary focus. 鈥淭he institution has empowered us to tailor our four-year education to align more closely with our individual interests, career aspirations, and academic strengths鈥.

Daniil鈥檚 favorite spot on campus is the Bissell Library, which he believes 鈥渆xudes an American vibe鈥 and serves as a hub of knowledge and collaboration.

For Daniil, the strong sense of community at ACT, where everyone, including professors, is approachable and friendly, has made his learning experience both interactive and enjoyable.

Our final interviewee, Daniel Stefani took the opportunity to study at 必吃大瓜in a spontaneous and multidirectional move. Drawn by his love for sciences and physical activity,  Daniel saw 必吃大瓜as the perfect blend to develop both his social and academic sides.

act testimonials 1

Currently working as a developer at an Italian company, Daniel has successfully found a balance between work and school. He emphasizes the importance of effective time management, maintaining good mental well-being, proper nutrition, and engaging in physical activities. 鈥淚n the fast-paced world of computer science, having an outlet for energy is crucial to navigate the constant flow of information鈥.

Reflecting on his academic journey at ACT, one of the most significant improvements Daniel has observed have been in the areas of 鈥渨riting and speaking鈥. As he mentions; 鈥渂eing a senior finishing up my degree, I've never felt more confident in my approach when it comes to interacting with others in the professional world through all kinds of mediums, and my experience in 必吃大瓜has been a factor that contributed to this positively鈥. He mentions that he arrived at 必吃大瓜with a 鈥減rofessionally-oriented mindset鈥, eager to broaden his horizons in the professional realm, which he did not only achieve by acquiring his first job, but also through the 鈥渦nexpected possibilities鈥 that unfolded during his studies at ACT.

鈥淏eyond the academic sphere, my experience at 必吃大瓜has made me a more fulfilled individual in nearly every aspect - not to mention the countless social and networking opportunities that allowed me to not only be a better student, but also a better person. I am very thankful for being able to study at 必吃大瓜with a scholarship, as without it my stay at 必吃大瓜wouldn鈥檛 have been possible and I am eternally grateful for being a grant recipient鈥.

鈥淚 appreciate the relaxed atmosphere at ACT, which resonates with the culture I am familiar with in Albania. The multicultural environment allows me to meet people from different backgrounds, providing diverse perspectives that enrich my overall experience.鈥

Engagement is a key aspect of Daniel鈥檚 必吃大瓜experience. He actively participates in various events and is a member of the Google Student Developer Club but also values the chance to take trips and explore different activities, such as a class on sea sailing; 鈥渢his particular class provides a refreshing break, allowing me to feel close to nature鈥.
